Topic: Healthcare
Question: Is healthcare a right or a privilege?
At the urging of the United States, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations in 1948. The declaration proclaims that "everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself and one's family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care." American philosopher John Rawls, stated in his 1999 book, A Theory of Justice, "Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of a society as a whole cannot override. Therefore in a just society the rights secured by justice are not subject to political bargaining or the calculus of social interests." Let us ask our fellow citizens to contemplate the state of healthcare in the United States today. Please Google for more information.

Question: Do your buying habits affect
the environment? Does it matter?
Gary Gardner, director of research for World Watch has stated,
"Most of the environmental issues we see today can be linked
to consumption." Adding up all the raw materials and energy
that produce the goods and services we consume over a lifetime
as individuals and then multiplied to include our families,
cities and countries is tempting to ignore. But the staggering
toll on our environment demonstrates the danger of our doing
so. More people are becoming aware of the importance of our
environment lately. Let's ask our neighbors to think about how
consumer habits impact our world. Please Google

Question: Is easy, legal access
to guns worth campus massacres?
Did you know that in Colorado:
---There are no restrictions on the sale or possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.
---Assault weapons are as easy to buy as hunting rifles.
---There is no requirement for firearms dealers to obtain a state license to sell firearms.
---There is no requirement for handgun buyers to obtain a handgun license or undergo any type of safety training prior to buying a handgun.
---There is no requirement that gun owners register their firearms.
---There are no restrictions on the sale of Saturday night specials or "junk" handguns.
---People buying firearms at swap meets, or through newspapers, or internet advertisements are not subject to background checks.
---There is no waiting period for gun sales beyond the "instant check" in federal law.
---There is no law restricting the sale or possession of large capacity ammunition magazines that can fire 30, 50 or even 75 rounds without reloading.
---There are no restrictions on gun-trafficking such as a limit on the number of handguns that can be purchased at one time.
--- State law forces police to let almost anyone carry a concealed handgun in public.

Question: Did you know our government
can read your mail
and e-mail?
In the past, federal law required a search warrant to open first
class mail unless postal inspectors suspected it contained something
dangerous, like a bomb or hazardous chemical. When President
Bush signed the Postal Reform Act in January, 2007, he added
a signing statement which essentially allowed his administration
to open and read any mail under "exigent circumstances".
There is also evidence of the Bush administration accessing
personal citizen e-mails, documents, pictures, Web browsing,
and voice-over-internet phone conversations. We have given up
civil liberties in order to live in a "safer" country.
Let's ask our fellow citizens to think about whether that is

Question: Did you know medical
bills are the #1 cause of bankruptcy?
According to Elizabeth Warren, a law professor at Harvard University,
an American files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious
health problem every 30 seconds. Most of the medically bankrupt
are (were) middle-class homeowners who had been to college,
had responsible jobs and health insurance. Today's health insurance
policies- with high deductibles, co-pays, and many exclusions-
offer little protection during a serious illness. The U.S. healthcare
system costs over $2 trillion a year with 47 million uninsured.

The Bush Administration has now requested a total of over $800
billion for the direct costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated Federal
expenditures for the two wars and interest on war-related debt

Health Insurance for Veterans
Question:
Did you know 1.8 million U.S. Veterans don't have health insurance?
Contrary
to what most Americans think, not all veterans qualify for free
health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Since
the year 2000- there are 290,000 more vets lacking health coverage.
According to a new Harvard study most uninsured veterans are
part of the working middle class making too much money to qualify
for Medicaid or means-tested VA care and too poor to afford
private coverage. In January of 2003, the Veterans Administration
ordered a halt to the enrollment of most vets who do not qualify
as poor. This was done to reduce the backlog of patients for
care. Does this information make you want to ask questions?

Is the "surge" in Iraq worth more death and debt?
This action
will address the Iraq war again. As of today, 3373 soldiers
have died and there are
more than 27,000 wounded. It is hard to get a definitive account
of the enormous number of Iraqi soldier and civilian deaths.
Sometimes these numbers
are hard to comprehend as many in our community have no personal
connection to those who have died or those who have been
injured. According to Bryan
Bender of The Boston Globe, "Some leading economists have predicted that,
depending on how long troops remain in Iraq, the endeavor could reach several
trillion dollars as a result of more "hidden" costs - including recruiting
expenses to replenish the ranks and the lifelong benefits the government
pays to veterans." Representative James P. Mcgovern from Massachusetts
described the long-term financial impact of the war as, "It is being paid
for on the national credit card. It is being put on the backs of our kids
and our grandkids. That is indefensible." Let us ask our neighbors how
much more death and debt they are willing to accept for the war in Iraq.

Question:
Does burying 27---?soldiers here prove
we're fighting
the war over there?
Let's
ask the community about the commonly used justification
for war, "Let's fight the war over there
so we won't have to fight it here". Is that working? Are the
consequences of the Iraq War staying 'over there'? Please
check http://icasualties.org/oif/ to fill in the correct
number of
soldier deaths Friday night the 20th. Or please, give
us a call for the correct number 720-344-7696. Please
remember that
it is important to have the same exact wording on your
sign.

Health Insurance
Question:
Did you know 767,000 Coloradoans
lack Health Insurance?
According
to Marie Cocco from Newsday, an official, non-partisan
government commission set up by Congress found
that over 90% of study participants believe every American
should have affordable health coverage. The commission
found that, "across the board, that majorities of the population
were willing to pay more to ensure that all Americans are covered." Americans
are concerned and insecure about their health-care future.
Let us ask our community members to think about how this
issue affects them and their neighbors.

U.S. Foreign Policy
Question:
Is current U.S. policy spreading Hope
or Hatred?
U.S. foreign policy has changed a great deal
in the last 6 years. The United States used to symbolize hope-
in and around the world. Let us ask our neighbors if they think
that is still the case. Are we exporting hope or hate? It is
distressing to have reached a point where we feel the need
to ask such a question.

National Debt
Question:
Is it moral to leave our children our
$8.5 trillion National Debt?
This is the second time we will address the
issue of our enormous National Debt. During our action last
June, 2005 the debt was $7.7 trillion. That debt has now grown
to $8.5 trillion. Every man, woman and child would have to
pay $28,500 each in order to pay it off today. Let us ask our
community if it is ethical to leave our children this amount
of debt? Should our government exercise some fiscal responsibility?
There is considerable concern about U.S. debt among international
financial markets as well. The possible consequences of such
debt are disturbing. Please google for more information.

Question:
Should our soldiers die in an Iraq Civil
War?
This
action will address the Iraq War again. Do
you think a civil war in Iraq has already started? What
should the U.S. do if we are occupying Iraq when an 'actual'
civil war breaks out?
Which side should our soldiers defend- the Sunnis or
the Shiites? Should the U.S. allow themselves
to be in a position to have to make that decision? What
are the probabilities that
we will have to face this predicament? Let's ask the
public to think about the consequences for such a dilemma.

Question:
You choose: Tax cuts for the
rich or more funding for Homeland Security?
This action will address how our government chooses to spend
taxpayer money. Do our elected officials
place a higher priority on tax cuts for the rich
at the expense of our safety and Homeland Security?
Do those tax cuts make us safer? Are tax cuts the best way
to solve our security problems?

Pres. Bush's

This

the Iraq War. Whether it be the loss in soldier
and civilian deaths and injuries, cuts in funding
for Veteran and health
programs, cuts in education and environmental
programs, curbs on our civil liberties, damage
to the reputation of the United

Question: "How much
does the current genocide in
Darfur, Sudan
disturb you?"
Since 2003, the Sudanese government and Janjaweed
militias have killed tens of thousands of people, raped
and assaulted thousands of women and girls, bombed, burned
and destroyed hundreds of villages, forced more than 2
million Darfurians from their homes and created at least
1.5 million people in need of food assistance because
of the disruption in the local economies, etc. Although
the United States has declared the treatment
of black Sudanese in Darfur as genocide, we and other
nations around the world have not taken the necessary steps
to end the slaughter of innocents. Let us bring
more attention to this unacceptable situation. Google-- genocide
