Discuss "The Making of Americans" with the Progressive Book Club

The Progressive Book Club will be discussing "The Making of Americans" by E.D. Hirsch at the April meeting.

Book:  The Making of Americans
Author:  E.D. Hirsch
ISBN:  9780300152814

Described by Tattered Cover:  Why, after decades of commissions, reforms, and efforts at innovation, do our schools continue to disappoint us?  In this comprehensive and thought-provoking book, educational theorist E. D. Hirsch, Jr. offers a masterful analysis of how American ideas about education have veered off course, what we must do to right them, and most importantly why. He argues that the core problem with American education is that educational theorists, especially in the early grades, have for the past sixty years rejected academic content in favor of “child-centered” and “how-to” learning theories that are at odds with how children really learn.  The result is failing schools and widening inequality, as only children from content-rich (usually better-off) homes can take advantage of the schools’ educational methods.Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 7:00 PM

Discuss "The Family" with the Progressive Book Club

The Progressive Book Club will be discussing "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power" by Jeff Sharlet at the November meeting.

Book: The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power
Author: Jeff Sharlet
ISBN: 0060560053

Described by Tattered Cover Bookstore:  They insist they are just a group of friends, yet they funnel millions of dollars through tax-free corporations. They claim to disdain politics, but congressmen of both parties describe them as the most influential religious organization in Washington. They say they are not Christians, but simply believers. Behind the scenes at every National Prayer Breakfast since 1953 has been the Family, an elite network dedicated to a religion of power for the powerful. Their goal is "Jesus plus nothing." Their method is backroom diplomacy. "The Family" is the startling story of how their faith--part free-market fundamentalism, part imperial ambition--has come to be interwoven with the affairs of nations around the world.

Discuss "American Gospel" with the Progressive Book Club

The Progressive Book Club will be discussing 'American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation' by Jon Meecham at the October 2009 meeting.

Book: American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation
Author: Jon Meacham
ISBN: 0812976665

Described by Tattered Cover Bookstore: The American Gospel-literally, the good news about America-is that religion shapes our public life without controlling it. In this vivid book, New York Times bestselling author Jon Meacham tells the human story of how the Founding Fathers viewed faith, and how they ultimately created a nation in which belief in God is a matter of choice. At a time when our country seems divided by extremism, American Gospel draws on the past to offer a new perspective. Meacham re-creates the fascinating history of a nation grappling with religion and politics-from John Winthrop's "city on a hill" sermon to Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence; from the Revolution to the Civil War; from a proposed nineteenth-century Christian Amendment to the Constitution to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s call for civil rights; from George Washington to Ronald Reagan.
